Our Lady of Guadalupe Abbey

We, as members of Our Lady of Guadalupe Abbey, follow the Rule of St. Benedict in our daily lives. We also follow the Constitutions of our Olivetan Founder St. Bernard Tolomei.

As professed members of the Roman Catholic Church, we follow her teachings.

Through our consecrated lives, our simple way of life, and our retreat ministry, we hope to bring prayer, healing, compassion and peace to the world as Jesus taught us.
Are we a perfect community? No we’re not, but by the grace of God, we strive to do the best that we can each day to fulfill our mission, and to help build up the Kingdom of God on earth.

We open our doors for those who seek peace and refuge in a world caught up in change. According to the Rule of St Benedict, we strive to live in a manner of life that bears witness to the teachings of Jesus Christ and his mission on earth. We pray for the world and its concerns, and ask the intercession of Our Lady of Guadalupe in all things, that she may guide us all and fill us with her grace.

Come & See!

A new website – a new look. Now I need a few good men to come and help me give honor to the website and what it presents, and build up my community of monks. Two or three more would make all the difference and help usher in a new beginning, a new chapter, to help us all move forward.

We are very few – just five, but I keep us all going with God’s grace. We are situated on a thousand acres in a beautiful valley, at an altitude of seven thousand feet, just outside the village of Pecos NM. We are a little bit off the beaten track – many people do not know we are here, which in a way is nice! After all, we are supposed to live in the world, but apart from the world.

Our main ministry is hospitality. We have two guest houses which we rent out for group retreats. We generally are busy April – October. We also accommodate individuals for private retreats. And we have four hermitages, which are very popular for silent retreats.
We pray almost the full office every day, with some leniency depending on what is happening and at the discretion of the abbot, all according to the holy Rule of St Benedict.

It might seem daunting to some who come and take a look at us. But, I always tell men that they can ‘be the change they would like to see.” I’ve been here 22 years and know the monastery well. As abbot I don’t sit around all day enjoying the view from my office window – I wear many hats and do whatever is necessary. That’s the life of a monk…right?

Please give me a call or email me if you are a healthy man under the age of 50 and willing to work hard to build up the Kingdom of God, and are not afraid to get your hands dirty!

God bless you,

Abbot Aidan, OSB
